Go where people like you gather.

Have you ever been to a reallyyy good concert?

The music is great, the artist is doing their thing on stage, and you’re singing in perfect harmony with hundreds or thousands of strangers.

In that moment, you feel connected to the artist, their music and the community, and it changes everything.

It changes how you think of the artist, how you connect with their music and how it feels to be a part of that community.

It’s a wonderful feeling, and I think everyone should seek out the same feeling for their career of interest.

That sense of unity, excitement, and possibility you feel at a great concert can also be found in your area of professional interest.

This is why I think everyone should go where there’s a high concentration of like-minded people.

It could be a city, a conference or even a coffee shop.

It just needs to be where people who are interested in the same things that you are congregate.

If you’re in the movie industry, that could be Hollywood or Los Angeles generally; if you’re in the Fintech industry, that could be the Money 20/20 conference; if you’re in the agricultural industry, then it could be World AG Expo, you get the idea.

For me and my interest in tech, it was time spent in San Francisco.

Meeting people who are building amazing things, learning what the future could look like, casual encounters with tech multi-millionaires and even a billionaire.

Ohhhh, what a time!

And if I were to summarise what this does for you, this is how I’ll put it:

  1. Increased rate of learning & connections: You meet, connect and learn from others who are on the same path as you.
  2. New understanding of what is possible: Your ideas on what is possible start to expand, and you start to understand that anything and everything is possible.
  3. Increased minimum quality threshold: Your threshold of what is acceptable goes higher. i.e You will become uncomfortable

These things have a profound effect on you and help you build a stronger sense of who you want to become.

So whatever it is that you’re really interested in, I think you should go to where others like you congregate: Cities, Conferences, Coffee shops…

Even if it’s just once in your lifetime.

Ask yourself where the highest density of people with the same career goals as you is. Find out and go there.

Because anytime you look back at it, you will remember that you were at peace and you will remember that you were home.

Hey, thanks for reading this. No, really, thanks.

I’ve challenged myself to write an article a month for at least 3 years. This is my second year, and your reading it helps keep the momentum. Well, if you enjoyed reading this, then you should definitely check out my Substack for other topics that I’ve written about.
